It is common knowledge that any technical indicator, be it moving averages, or oscillators such as Stochastics or RSI, all these indicators tend to use price as the base. For example, a simple moving average is constructed as an average of price over a specified period of time. Therefore, proponents of price action believe that it is better to use price as an indicator itself and trading with price directly rather than having to use any indicators.

It’s worth pointing out how in the indicator-laden chart you actually have to give up some room on the chart to have the indicators at the bottom, this forces you to make the . part of the chart smaller, and it also draws your attention away from the natural . and onto the indicators. Put simply, price action is how price changes, ., the ‘action’ of price. It’s most easily observed in markets with high liquidity and volatility, but really anything that is bought or sold in a free market will generate price action.

The candlestick approach of price action deals with a certain behavior of price depicted in the candlestick charts. Of course, at times the OHLC bar chart is also used. Although both the bar chart and candlestick charts tend to reflect the same sentiment, candlesticks are used as they are easy to recognize.

The price action trading strategies that I use and teach in my price action course  consist of support and resistance levels (price action) combined with pin bars, inside bars and 8775 pinside 8776 bars (trading strategies).

At first glance, it can almost be as intimidating as a chart full of indicators.  Like anything in life, we build dependencies and handicaps from on pain of real-life experiences.  If you have been trading with your favorite indicator for years, going down to a bare chart can be somewhat traumatic.

Trading with price action signals is not only about the signal itself, but it’s also about where the signal forms on the chart. Every pin bar, inside bar, etc. is not created equal. Depending on where a particular price action signal forms in a market, you may not want to trade it or you may want to jump on it without hesitation.

But look how the perspective changes when we have the support and resistance lines drawn on the chart. A bearish candle at the second retest is indicative that market sentiment will be bearish, which was reiterated by the following bearish candles that were formed.

It can be practically applied to any trading strategy, from break outs, to moving average cross-overs to oscillators. While price action might seem a bit complicated at first, with due practice it can become second nature for the trader to trade with price action.

For the most part, all of the vanilla forex price action trading techniques you find out there are based upon patterns. Some of these patterns can be flags, triangles, double tops and bottoms, pinbars, inside bars, etc.  But if you are trading these patterns just because they are a pattern, then you are really failing to understand what price action is.

Price action is not generally seen as a trading tool like an indicator, but rather the data source off which all the tools are built. Swing traders and trend traders tend to work most closely with price action, eschewing any fundamental analysis in favor of focusing solely on support and resistance levels to predict breakouts and consolidation. Even these traders must pay some attention to additional factors beyond the current price, as the volume of trading and the time periods being used to establish levels all have an impact on the likelihood of their interpretations being accurate.

In this next example, we are looking at the inside bar trading pattern. This chart shows both a regular inside bar signal as well as an inside pin bar combo setup. An inside pin bar combo is simply an inside bar with a pin bar for the inside bar. These setups work very well in trending markets like we see in the chart below.
